Dwarves
Tuota, minun sanakirjassani (Hurme - Pesonen - Syväoja) sanan
elf monikkomuotona on yksikantaan
elves. Wiktionarykaan ei mainitse mitään *
elfs-monikosta:
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elf
Lieneekö kuitenkin kyseessä eräs toinen sana?
The Hobbitin esipuheessa J.R.R. kirjoittaa näin:
The Professor sanoi:
In English the only correct plural of dwarf is dwarfs, and the adjective is dwarfish. In this story dwarves and dwarvish are used, but only when speaking of the ancient people to whom Thorin Oakenshield and his companions belonged.
Tässä on myös alaviite (se tietysti puuttui ensimmäisestä vuoden 1937 laitoksesta samoin kuin koko esipuhe, joka tuli nykymuodossaan mukaan vasta vuoden 1966 "kolmanteen laitokseen") joka viittaa
The Lord of the Ringsin Appendix F:ään (eli aikaisempaan tekstiin). Siellä samaa asiaa selitellään näin:
The Professor sanoi:
It may be observed that in this book as in The Hobbit the form dwarves is used, although the dictionaries tell us that the plural of dwarf is dwarfs. It should be dwarrows (or dwerrows), if singular and plural had each gone its own way down the years, as have man and men, or goose and geese. But we no longer speak of a dwarf as often as we do of a man, or even a goose, and memories have not been fresh enough among Men to keep hold of a special plural for a race now abandoned to folk-tales, where at least a shadow of truth is preserved.
Asian käsittely jatkuu vielä hieman, Tolkien olisi pitänyt parempana ilmeisesti muotoa
dwarrow, joka näkyy nimessä
Dwarrowdelf 'Kääpiökaivanto'. Tämä käy ilmi hänen kirjeestään Stanley Unwinille pian
The Hobbitin ilmestymisen jälkeen (Letters #17, siteeraan tässä
The Annotated Hobbitin kautta):
The Professor sanoi:
No reviewer (that I have seen), although all have carefully used the correct dwarfs themselves, has commented on the fact (which I only became conscious of through reviews) that I use throughout the "incorrect" plural dwarves. I am afraid it is just a piece of private bad grammar, rather shocking in a philologist... The real "historical" plural of dwarf (like teeth of tooth) is dwarrows, anyway: rather a nice word, but a bit too archaic. Still I rather wish I had used the word dwarrow.
Ainakin mainitsemassani Englanti-suomi -suursanakirjassa molemmat monikkomuodot - s.v.
dwar|f: (pl ~s, -ves [vz]) -- esiintyvät, tiedä sitten milloin
dwarves on tullut yksikielisiin sanakirjoihin (on kai tullut?). Minulla on mm. vuodelta 1980 oleva
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English ja siinä on monikkomuodoksi ilmoitettu vain
dwarfs.
PS. Näyttää olevan enkkuwikissä asiasta myös:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dwarf#Etymology
PPS. Samat sitaatit vähän laajempina löytyvät myös Vardan sivulta:
http://valarguild.org/varda/Tolkien/encyc/articles/d/dwarves/dwarfpluralof.htm
PPPS. Entä sitten samoin päättyvät sanat - liekö muita? -
wharf ja
scarf? Molemmilla on ainakin Wiktionaryn mukaan kaksi monikkomuotoa,
wharves/wharfs, scarves/scarfs, tosin
wharfs on Wiktionaryn mukaan "considered nonstandard".
Toisaalta esim.
elf >
elves (*
elfs ei käytetä),
half >
halves (
halfs tunnetaan, mutta ei suositella),
calf >
calves/calfs. Niiettä on tämä englannin kieli hassua.
